a doe fades into memory

Zwielicht

Dämmrung will die Flügel spreiten,
Schaurig rühren sich die Bäume,
Wolken ziehn wie schwere Träume -
Was will dieses Grau'n bedeuten?

Hast ein Reh du lieb vor andern,
Laß es nicht alleine grasen,
Jäger ziehn im Wald und blasen,
Stimmen hin und wider wandern....

Joseph von Eichendorff

At Twilight

If you love a little doe,
don’t let her go grazing alone.
Hunters beat the woods and sound the horn.
Voices wander to and fro….

Be dark for her now, be forest.
Her wholeness cascades into many shapes.
The luminous death in her eyes leaps
and shelters in your unrest.

[ Note: Obviously not exactly a translation. But, then, not exactly not a translation, either. I'll leave that up to you.... Thanks also to Rilke and to her ....]

you've caught her essence well ...

such a difference between the two stanzas :-) i still maintain that you saved Eichendorff's poem.
and that marvelous re-writing of Rilke.

"be dark for her now, be forest" - i am repeating this to myself, as a kind of glorious mantra. but i love everything in the last stanza, the luminous death, the unexpected leap, the sheltering into what is perhaps a greater danger...

"shelters in your unrest" - love this line, the subtle paradox of it.

isabella
